Deadpool made his first appearance in New Mutants #98 by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza where, similarly to Wolverine against the Hulk, Deadpool is hired to kill Cable and proves to be a worthy adversary to the heroic mutant and his team. Wolverine made his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181 by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe in which Wolverine was hired by the government to take the Hulk down, effectively making him a Hulk villain throughout the issue.
